Trauma-Informed Care For All SLPs

Trauma-Informed Care For All SLPs

No matter what setting a Speech-language pathologist (SLP) works in, they will work with a patient who has experienced trauma. Although there is no prescriptive therapy technique, there is trauma-informed care. This is where we ask ourselves how can we reduce causing retraumatization, even if it was unintentional. In this session, we will discuss the start of trauma-informed research, where we are today, and what still needs to be done. We will also discuss how SLPs specifically can benefit from using trauma-informed care in their work setting.

Rachel Archambault, MA CCC-SLP is a Speech-language Pathologist (SLP) Program Specialist in Broward County, FL. For the past six years, she was the SLP at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. In 2018, she experienced a mass shooting at work. It was there she found and implemented trauma-informed care in order to work with her students who had also undergone trauma. She created the Instagram page @PTSD.SLP where she posts resources for SLPs and other educators who are looking to understand trauma. Rachel has presented at state and national conferences, both virtually and in-person, on this topic that is very close to her heart. Her hope is to encourage all professionals to adopt a trauma-informed mindset.
