Rich Tapestry: Decentering Whiteness and Cultivating Equity in Academia

Rich Tapestry: Decentering Whiteness and Cultivating Equity in Academia

The intention of this session is to provide an overview of a framework to decenter Whiteness and cultivate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in Communication Sciences and Disorders Programs. In the eloquent words of Maya Angelou, “We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color.”

Drawing from the DEI efforts of the Minnesota State University Mankato Communication Sciences and Disorders program, this presentation will highlight the program’s DEI Strategic Task Force. With studies citing the speech-language pathology discipline as being more than 92 percent White, this presentation will discuss a potential pathway for recruiting and retaining students of color while also deconstructing Whiteness through a commitment to cultural responsiveness and cultural humility, and anti-oppressive teaching. The strategic pathway could be applied to a variety of educational entities and/or academic disciplines.
